In this article, Natalia considers what happens we watch films and TV programmes on the popular platform. The aim is to understand how it works in order to be aware of the carbon footprint of our online behaviour. How? By analysing the computational complexity of video processing. The available literature (including publications by Netflix itself) shows that video encoding and encryption techniques are the most energy-consuming tasks.
