Meet Alejandro Martín

Alumni of the Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering at Universidad Europea and undergraduate research assistant at Universidad Europea de Madrid

Since being a student, Alejandro realised the impact engineering could have on the field of health in terms of treating disease.

It was then that he became motivated to do courses in Biomedical Engineering while studying.

Alejandro started working on the synthesis, preparation and characterisation of carbon nanotubes used as catalysts to design more effective therapies.

His project resulted in the study of synaptic plasticity in neurons and cancer cells through the analysis of oxygen uptake in single cells using platinum electrochemical nano-electrodes, and he is currently working on a project researching the bioenergetics of brain cancer cells at the Imperial College London, in the departments of brain science and brain medicine.

Currently there are studies as a whole, but the mechanism and behaviour of single cells with regard to bioenergetics is unknown. This innovative project is based on the study of oxygen signals at the individual, non-contact level.

His study could lead to the development of a new approach to targeted therapies for cancer and brain diseases. For now, the research has achieved interesting result to be published soon.

Thanks to Singular Alumni, Alejandro can use the funds from the award to continue his research in the area of neuroscience.
